While she has tons of money, it has been ingrained into her to save money wherever she can, and she routinely calls me from California to let me know what kind of deals I might be able to find at an online shopping mall or from the local dollar stores. These dollar stores have sprung up all over the place, and are in every major city, and some of them have incredible buys on things, like food. I've started buying lots of my produce from the local dollar stores. I can get organic romaine lettuce dirt cheap there, compared to the grocery stores.  Price comparison shopping for food items can save so much money, and while it's never a huge amount, like comparison shopping for appliances or televisions, it does save tons of money over the long haul. We love going to thrift stores and when I visit her, we plan on hitting all the thrift stores in the neighborhood, and the discount specialty stores, as well.
